NATIONAL RAIL AWARDS

2017 MAJOR STATION OF THE YEAR

-

The winning entry was London Blackfriars, which was transformed a few years ago by Network Rail under the Thameslink Programme. This aimed to increase capacity and improve facilities on the Bedford to Brighton line, which passes through London and is one of the UK’s busiest and most popular commuter routes.

The £ 550 million improvements, remodelling and expansion works carried out at Blackfriars have certainly been a great success, with Network Rail producing a modern extended and refurbished station that has a ‘wow’ factor to it. It has an impressive entrance, the covered platforms span the River Thames and glazed walls provide fantastic views of the capital for passengers waiting for a train. The wide use of steel and glass gives the station a modern appearance that blends in well with the surrounding architecture.

As can be expected with all main stations in London, there are excellent links to bus services, and the Underground station at Blackfriars has also been modernised in recent years.

One of the main aims of the Thameslink Programme was to increase capacity on the line, with stations along the route capable of accommodating 12-coach trains for the busiest peak services. The through platforms at Blackfriars can now handle these lengthy trains, making use of some redundant bridge piers to expand the station platform area. The covered platforms housed above the river are a huge improvement on the old Blackfriars station, which was rather exposed to the elements. Because the platforms cross the Thames, entrances to the station have been created on both the north and south sides of the river.

The judges praised station staff for their welcoming and helpful attitude to users. Negotiating the railway network around London can be confusing to those who are unfamiliar with the area, so having friendly and approachable staff on hand to offer reassurance and assistance is essential. At London Blackfriars, the staff do their job exceptionally well.

As with all the Major stations entered into the NRA, Blackfriars is operated by Network Rail. Glasgow Central and last year’s winner Manchester Piccadilly were Highly Commended.
