Overhead masts erected for MML electrification
The first overhead electrification masts have been erected on the Midland Main Line as part of the wiring project for the route.
Forty masts were installed at Great Oakley, just north of the A43 between Kettering and Corby. They are the first to be erected on the MML since the electrification to Bedford some 40 years ago.
The five-metre masts were installed into steel piles that had been placed earlier this year. Network Rail said the masts were installed over five nights.
On the MML south of Kettering, the first masts will be erected from February.
Other electrification-related work to have been carried out recently includes raising and strengthening bridges and installing 10,000 yards of fencing. New track has been laid between Kettering and Corby to double the route for increased capacity.
Further work includes installing a new track south of Kettering, resignalling, line speed improvements between Bedford and Market Harborough, and platform extensions. Track and platform construction, extensions and line speed improvements at Derby are also related to the project.
Electric trains are due to be introduced north of Bedford in 2020 with bi-mode trains capable of 125mph to follow two years later, after Secretary of State for Transport Chris Grayling cancelled electrification between Kettering/ Corby and Nottingham/Derby/ Sheffield ( RAIL 832).
“Reaching this landmark step on the upgrade of the MML has real significance,” said NR’s London North Eastern and East Midlands Route Managing Director Rob McIntosh.
“Coupled with projects elsewhere on the route, it will bring real benefits to the communities and economies our railway serves.”
