Rail (UK)

WELCOME

-

to the RAIL Crossword. In this issue, we have two copies of the DVD Locomotives in Action

at Washwood Heath 1996 to give away, courtesy of British Railways.tv ( www.britishrailwaysondvd.co.uk).

With a running time of approximately 50 minutes, this DVD (which retails at £6.99) offers a selection of diesel and electric locomotives in action at the Birmingham facility. Highlights include:

■ Classes 31, ‘37’, ‘47’, ‘56’, ‘60’ and ‘90’.

■ Wide range of freight including cars, car parts, containers, coal, scrap, enterprise, china clay, stone and parcels.

■ Liveries including BR Blue, Railfreight, Transrail, Dutch, Freightliner, Rail Express Systems (RES) & Intercity.

■ Double-headed Class 56 light engine.

■ Triple-headed Dutch-liveried Class 37 light engine move.

■ London Underground stock hauled by Mainline 37194.

■ Dutch 31102 light engine.

■ Intercity 47520 with containers.

■ Plus much more! Any footage from Washwood Heath is especially poignant because the facility is being demolished as part of the HS2 construction process, with a new depot for the new railway to be built near the site.

The former Metropolitan Cammell Carriage and Wagon Company was closed by Alstom in 2005. It had a subsequent life as home to Boden Rail Engineering Ltd, Colas Rail and DCRail, prior to another closure. Trains built at the site include Class 101, ‘156’, ‘175’ and ‘180’ diesel multiple units, Class 334, ‘458’, ‘460’ and ‘465’ electric multiple units, Class 373 Eurostar vehicles and Class 390 Pendolinos. Mk 4 coaches were also built there, as were the iconic Blue Pullman trains and the ‘Brighton Belle’.

London Underground trains including the D-Stock, Bakerloo, District, Northern and Jubilee Line trains currently in traffic were also built there.

HS2 trains will be maintained at the new site, where activities will include cleaning, servicing and routine repairs of the trains. Washwood Heath will operate 24 hours a day, 365 days a year with up to 500 staff working in shifts. It is HS2’s only rolling stock maintenance depot for Phases 1 and 2a of the railway.
