New Leeds stations

-

Leeds City Council remains committed to plans for three new stations as part of £173.5 million transport investment in the city.

LEEDS City Council remains committed to continuing the planning of three new stations within the city’s boundary.

The stations will be at Thorpe Park (linked to employment and housing growth), White Rose/ Millshaw Business Park (to support the employment and retail centre), and a new parkway station to serve Leeds Bradford Airport.

They would be funded by using part of the £173.5 million which the Government would have provided towards the cost of the city’s trolleybus scheme, which the Department for Transport subsequently cancelled. That money remains available for transport investment in the city, provided it is spent before the end of 2021.

The council updated its Connecting Leeds strategy document in February, saying that “Leeds City Region currently has the most ambitious programme for the development and opening of new stations in the country”

The strategy also notes that “an integrated T-shaped station in Leeds will accommodate HS2, Northern Powerhouse Rail and local and regional services”.

An Atkins-led consortium has been commissioned to develop the masterplan for Leeds station, to create “a distinctive modern destination and fully integrated national transport hub”.

Also in the long-term vision is an ultra-modern mass transit system. Leeds is keen to attract the very latest technologies, having had its bid for a modern tram and then a trolleybus system rejected by successive governments.
