Thameslink 2000
Railtrack’s 1999 Network Management Statement describes Thameslink 2000 as follows:
“The primary objectives of Thameslink 2000 are to:
Provide increased capacity on train services to central London.
Give a substantially expanded range of cross-London journey opportunities which will minimise the need for passenger interchange.
Alleviate congestion on parts of London Underground.
Give an additional means of passenger dispersal from CTRL services at St Pancras.
Major works include:
Construction of a grade-separated junction at Bermondsey to separate Thameslink 2000 and Charing Cross-bound trains.
An additional two lines to increase capacity between London Bridge and Metropolitan Junction.
Signalling works to provide the specified track capacity which will be integrated with renewals of signalling equipment and control systems approaching the end of their economic life.
A link to the East Coast Main Line to the north of King’s Cross.
Extensive reconstruction and refurbishment of London Bridge, Blackfriars and Farringdon stations.
Construction of a St Pancras Midland Road Station which will provide interchange with the new international station, improved connections to St Pancras and King’s Cross domestic stations and London Underground. The basic construction of these will be undertaken by the CTRL promoter.
In the outer areas, Thameslink 2000 will operate over an area extending to Peterborough, Bedford, King’s Lynn, Ashford, Brighton and other destinations in the South East.
We are considering further capacity enhancements in the London Bridge area to enable both the existing service to Charing Cross and the full Thameslink 2000 service to operate. We are also considering improvements at stations to accommodate the forecast level of demand including the interchange with London Underground, at Farringdon.”
