NEW CROSS WORD PRIZE

-

to the RAIL Crossword. For this issue, we are giving away two copies of Today’s London Underground, courtesy of Pen & Sword Books ( www.pen-and-sword.co.uk).

The Underground network in London has always held a fascination for historians and transport enthusiasts, from the early days of the steam-operated system in the 1860s.

Today’s London Underground (hardback, 274 pages, retail price £30) covers the network as it is today, with features on the different lines across the capital and the modern-day rolling stock in use.

Author Reiss O’Neill’s book looks at the considerable changes on the London Underground in the past decade, with new S-Stock trains introduced, and infrastructure upgrades to accommodate the new rolling stock and to introduce step-free access for all. Some of the infrastructure and stock is about to disappear into history forever.

There is a chapter dedicated to each line, with further chapters looking at: architecture and structures; signage and design; depots and installations; rolling stock; and engineer’s rolling stock.

Each picture is accompanied by a detailed caption, providing information on the train and station featured.

An introduction by Matthew Wharmby breaks down each section, offering additional information on how the London Underground system and each line has changed in recent years.

The author is a lifelong enthusiast who has worked in the bus industry on the new Routemaster, and who now has a career in the railway industry.

His love of transport was inspired by stories told by his grandmother and by his grandfather, a London bus driver who came to the capital from Barbados in the 1950s to work for London Transport.

He has been photographing the Underground and main line trains in the capital for the past 20 years.
