Euston weekend closures to allow improvement works
Euston station is to close for three weekends in August and September, to enable the replacement of North Wembley Junction.
Network Rail said Euston would be shut over the weekends of August 18/19, August 25-27 (Bank Holiday weekend) and September 1/2, although the station shops will remain open, as will access to London Underground.
NR advised passengers to avoid travelling on the affected dates if possible, and to expect “very different” journeys to normal if they do decide to travel.
Virgin Trains said its services would start and finish at either Rugby or Milton Keynes, with a reduced level of service to Birmingham, Manchester, Liverpool and Scotland. A queueing system will operate at some stations, while bus replacements may be offered.
On August 18/19, London Northwestern Railway’s trains will start and terminate at Hemel Hempstead, while over the Bank Holiday buses will also replace trains between Birmingham International and Rugby due to work at Coventry. On September 1/2, trains will start and terminate at Milton Keynes Central.
LNWR Customer Experience Director Andrew Conroy said: “Our aim is to keep people moving if they have to travel on these dates. Improvement works are never convenient for anyone, but we have a tried and tested plan for operating buses to connect with alternative routes to and from London when Euston is closed. We still advise customers to travel on alternative days as these options will take significantly longer.”
Martin Frobisher, managing director for Network Rail’s London North Western Route, said: “We have worked together for the past three years with train operators to carefully plan this closure of the railway in a way that minimises impact on customers.
“It’s vital the track at north Wembley is replaced to continue to safely meet the huge demand of passenger and freight rail services on the West Coast Main Line. This work will result in better, more reliable journeys in future.”
