Satisfactory seats?
I was pleased to read that Great Western Railway’s new Hitachi Intercity Express Trains have higher customer satisfaction levels than the Class 125s that they replace ( RAIL 867).
But I wasn’t surprised that there was no mention of the seats, which many agree are uncomfortable. It’s very sad that a better compromise couldn’t have been found between capacity and comfort. I wouldn’t look forward to a five-hour journey to Penzance on such seats.
I note that the seats on the LNER version of the same trains are said to be ergonomically designed. Is this just a weaselly way of giving the impression that they are comfortable?
They are not necessarily so. The definitions of ergonomics in my dictionaries (and those online) are related to designing for efficiency in the working environment, although one does add “to minimise discomfort”. Should we just be grateful for that? Roger Hand, Taunton
