to the RAIL Crossword. In this issue,

we have two copies of Twenty First Century Narrow Gauge: A Pictorial Journey to give away, courtesy of Pen and Sword Books

Author James Waite has been a skilled railway photographer for many years. In this book he has brought together photographs of many of the world’s steam-worked narrow-gauge railways in the 21st century, concentrating mostly on views which show the scenery (both natural and man-made) through which they run.

They are accompanied by extended captions, the fruit of extensive research containing much historical information about the railways and their locomotives.

He also offers many fascinating insights into the districts and communities which they serve, along with anecdotes about his adventures while visiting them which are both amusing and informative.

Twenty First Century Narrow Gauge: A Pictorial Journey (hardback, 288 pages, retail price £35) has photographs from five continents, but with bigger sections devoted to Canada and the United States, Brazil,

Scandinavia, Germany, Switzerland, India, Australia and Wales.

“I’ve regarded any line whose gauge is less than 4ft 8½ins as being eligible for inclusion in this book,” writes the author in his foreword.

James Waite was brought up in Devon within sight and sound of one of the Great Western Railway’s prettiest branch lines. He was introduced to the narrow gauge at school (within sight of the old Lynton & Barnstaple Railway), and many years later retirement from full-time work has enabled him to discover for himself some of the many fascinating railways still running in faraway places.

“If you have the opportunity to visit some of the world’s little lines, try to go sooner rather than later,” he recommends in his foreword.
