Levenmouth

-

It was good to see the reports on the proposed reopening of the railway to Levenmouth ( RAIL 886, 892).

Since I moved to the area a few months ago, I have been greatly impressed by the Levenmouth Rail Campaign, which has been working hard for the past five years towards this outcome. Campaigners have organised petitions with thousands of signatures and lobbied tirelessly for the link.

Just in the past few months there have been two walks along the line (which remains intact), one with students and children and the other families; a survey at the adjacent East Fife football ground of fans from Edinburgh, to see if they would use the line (most would); and a stall on a street market where many more people signed up for the monthly newsletters.

It seems to me this is an excellent example of how to run a campaign. It was helped by wholehearted support from Fife Council and other local bodies; the rightness of the case for an area of 35,000 people (with another 10,000 nearby) likely to make use of the railway; the increasing need for low-carbon solutions to travel; and the economic case in a deprived area for access for employment, education and tourism - further than can reasonably be reached by bus.

The campaign will continue to hold authorities to account to reinstate the line by 2024 (or preferably sooner) - to improve bus, walking and cycling links and to involve all the economic advantages for this area of Fife.
