Memorandum signed over vision for the South East
Transport for the South East and Network Rail have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to underpin the working relationship between the subnational transport body and the infrastructure operator.
Although not legally binding, the document commits the two organisations to the delivery of a shared vision for the region, which includes facilitating modal shift, achieving net zero carbon targets, better integrated transport and land use planning, and providing best value to taxpayers.
Both TfSE and NR have pledged to explore options to improve cross-regional services on routes including Ashford-Reading and Brighton-Southampton, and to support the development of capacity improvements via schemes such as Woking and Croydon Area Remodelling.
Greater efforts will also be made, alongside industry partners, to remove diesel traction from the region and to increase the amount of freight carried by rail.
The MoU had originally been intended to be signed in February, but the Coronavirus pandemic delayed its formal agreement by both parties until August 7.
Speaking exclusively to RAIL, TfSE Lead Officer Rupert Clubb said: “The MoU sets out those common goals and objectives we have on net zero carbon, an improved customer experience, better integration, the relationship between transport and land use, and much more.”
NR’s London and South Strategy and Planning Director Mike Smith added: “This MoU is a signal of our intent, but also the action that we’ve already begun to take.”
