Gatwick Airport’s new Platform 7 opens for business

-

The first train to serve the new Platform 7 at Gatwick Airport station arrived on November

2, as part of the station’s transformation.

Work already completed includes the closure of the original Platform 7 and the construction of its replacement. Demolition work will start soon on the footbridge and on Platforms 5 and 6, which are out of service.

The two platforms taken out of use will be rebuilt with wider, more accessible platforms, and should open in May 2022.

Work is also under way on the new concourse that will be located above Platforms 5-7. The existing concourse will remain but will be substantially remodelled.

This Christmas, only two platforms will be open, with an amended service in place.

The plan is for the £150 million project to be complete by 2023.

“Once completed, the expanded modern station will be an impressive gateway to Global Britain, improving accessibility and enhancing the passenger experience to and from Gatwick,” said Rail Minister Chris HeatonHarris.

Region Investment Director Paul Harwood added: “We know fewer passengers are travelling by train or plane, but we are continuing to invest for the future.”
