A READING man is preparing to represent the UK at a major Scouting event next year.

Harry Lawrence will be travelling to Norway to take part in Roverway 2024.

He will join 5,000 Scouts from across Europe for the event which will be held in the Lundsneset region of the Scandinavian country.

The last time the event was held, it was in the Netherlands and was five years ago.

There are three parts of to the event: a five-day expedition across southern Norway, taking in the fjords and the coastline.

Then, the 16- to 22-year-olds will enjoy an international camp where they will engage in a programme of Scouting activities and skill development, before a ferry trip to visit Copenhagen in Denmark.

The event will take 15 days in total, and there will be 550 UK Scouts and 100 volunteers heading to our European neighbour for the event.

Harry is 20 and, away from the Scouts, a science apprentice. In the movement, he has reached the rank of Queen’s Scout.

He is looking forward to the opportunity to represent the UK during this unique event.

“I am excited to attend Roverway 2024 and hope to take on the role of Patrol Leader, or Assistant Patrol Leader to lead my fellow Scouts and Explorers to an international Scouting event,” he said.

“I thoroughly enjoy seeing Young People grow and develop.

“Having the chance to enable this same positive impact to individuals closer in age to myself would be a new challenge but I am excited to take on.

“This event is something completely different to my past international experiences, as it allows us as a patrol to have an exciting amount of choice over what we choose to do for our expedition – something that I haven’t experienced myself before.”

He added: “I see Roverway 2024 as an opportunity for myself to improve my leadership skills through Scouting and taking on the role of Patrol Leader for this event is the next step in my own personal development.”

The theme for Roverway is North of the Ordinary, and participants are encouraged to develop independence and resilience. The event runs from July 22 through to August 2, with a special event for the UK Scouts in Copenhagen from August 2-5.

The UK’s Chief adventurer Bear Grylls.

He wished Harry well: “A massive congratulations to Harry who has been selected to represent the UK at Roverway 2024.

“Roverway is an amazing opportunity to discover yourself and make new friends, while participating in a programme that demonstrates true Scouting spirit by developing skills for life.

“I’d just like to say good luck to our brilliant UK Contingent in their preparation for the event. They will be heading off on the trip of a lifetime to a beautiful destination in Stavanger.

“The diversity of people they will meet will remind us all about what the world has to offer: they will experience new cultures and make many new friends, becoming ever more tolerant and caring about others through this experience.”
