A kaleidoscope of colour with rainbow-enthused exhibition

ARTISTS from across Reading gathered in east Reading last weekend to showcase their talents.

The Love Unites was a celebration of art, photography and crafts, as well as marking LGBT History Month.

Held at St Luke’s Church Hall in Erleigh Road, the event attracted a steady stream of visitors.

Among the organisers was artist Leslee Barron, who said: “St Luke’s Hall has high ceilings beautifully lit by its vast windows, which lucky for us as it streamed sunlight on to the art, during the first day, Saturday.

“Seventeen-plus local artists, many of whom had exhibited during 2023, took part in the exhibition, plus some new, and very talented artists were welcomed too.”

There was an ambience to the two-day event.

“With fresh-cut wildflowers on the communal tables, and an abundance of refreshments; homemade cakes, teas and fresh coffee, patrons sat, chatted, and replenished themselves before they continued their tour of the stalls and walls,” Leslee said.

“A few wholeheartedly embraced the theme of ‘Love Unites’, the title decided by Redlands Parish church to celebrate LGBT History Month.

“And, as you would expect, there was an abundance of rainbow-themed artworks, craft items and greeting cards.

“Meanwhile, other artists and craftfolk provided many treats in the form of booklets, origami, homemade writing books, tiny books with words of inspiration, concertina books of painted themes, sculptures and of course the eclectic mix of art on the walls.”

Ms Barron said around 300 people visited throughout the weekend, buying as well as admiring the art. One piece, based on the LGBTQ+ Progress flag, is now on its way to South Africa.

She added: “Art lovers and members of the local community showed their support by attending, viewing, commenting and buying, and enjoyed the exhibition. I think we can put this one down as another success.”

The artists are now planning their next showcase at the venue on a date to be confirmed.
