THIS MONTH we’ve been reading Serpents In The City (an amazingly timely exploratio­n of political corruption and media manipulati­on); Spy On Spy (a somewhat silly WW2 espionage adventure); Livia Lone (vengeful female assassin rides Ducati shock); The Ice Lands (literary weirdness in Icelandic isolation); Moskva, by Jack Grimwood (seriously good novel set in mid-80s Russia) and Night Wolves, by Friedrich Neznansky (excellent police procedural set in the early post-Soviet Russian era).

MEANWHILE AT THE MOVIES we had a hoot with Dead Man by Jim Jarmusch (early Johnny Depp western) but thought Coffee and Cigarettes was self-indulgent luvvie nonsense; were entranced by Arrival (spot the wormhole aliens from DS9!); ditched out of The Fall and Vikings after two episodes apiece (life’s too short), but found box-set heaven in the form of Preacher…
