THINKING OF BUYING?
YOU MAY NEED to search far and wide for an unmolested R100/7 if that alone will fit your bill. This 1979 machine is up for sale in Germany; part-restored in ‘very good roadworthy condition’ with three previous owners and 35,000km on its clock. It’s at Motorrad Kantert who can arrange shipping to the UK for £300 on top of the £7700 asking price MARK MENTIONS that he secured his /7 before someone could transform it into a café custom. Here’s one which has been given the treatment. It started out as a 1977 R75/7 with 23,000 miles on it before it was stripped and rebuilt with an alloy tank and front guard, custom instruments, leather saddle, etc. It’s up for £4495 at Speed Superbikes; no warranty, sold as seen ‘for spares’
THIS 26,000-MILES 1978 R100 was recently imported from the USA after being stored for 18 years. It’s been serviced, UK registered and MoT’d. It’s the more sporting S model so is taller and lighter than an R100/7 with higher compression and bigger carbs, and this example has been fitted with a two-into-one exhaust. Dell’Orto carbs and smoked screen. The seller, Clive Cars, say that it’s ‘not been restored or dropped and is a real survivor, the paintwork is all original and it runs and ride perfectly.’ Advertised at £6000
THE OBVIOUS AIRHEAD alternative to an R100/7 is the long-lived R80. Slightly smaller but not much slower and there are several going under the hammer at the Charterhouse auction on February 3rd at the Bristol Show. This 1980 example has not been used since its ground-up restoration and comes with invoices totalling over £11k. It’s expected to sell for around £6000
