I’m due to renew my car insurance. The 150bhp estate is just two years old, is covered comprehensively for two drivers, stands in our driveway, does 9k miles a year and has 9 years no claims. I have been quoted a fee of £172.

I have an A65 and a Bantam (50bhp between them), which only I use; worth maybe £7k together. They are kept in our locked garage, they do pitifully few miles a year and I have made no claim in 50 years. Comprehensive cover for the bikes this year cost £156 . There was zero no claims allowance available and a non-detachable vehicle recovery provision despite my clearly stating I was already AA’ed to the hilt (with substantial no claims benefits).

Insurance is one of the most-discussed topics on most motoring groups, and we’re regularly asked for our views. As I always point out, we’re not an insurance broker, and have no idea of anyone’s personal circumstances.

Just as with yrgdslf, I can only speak from my own experience. Our car costs around £100pa, is insured via the Meerkat. Bikes are more complicated in that we have 17 between us, both ancient and modern, which means that we have more than one policy. The old bikes are all insured through Lynbrook, along with a couple of moderns. My own modern bikes are insured through Bennetts, who do offer a NCD and are easy to deal with. That said, I also visit the Meerkat every renewal to check that a seriously better package is unavailable.

Remember at all times that talking to someone who can give you relevant answers – insurance brokers – is always more useful than talking to folk on a publication, who can realistically only offer a comment, as here.

So: our 2004 RE Bullet costs £13.80pa, Rowena’s new BMW G310R costs £30pa, both as part of our joint policy; my 2018 H-D costs £130 on a standalone policy. Everyone is different; it’s impossible to generalise. Several brokers advertise with us, I’d suggest talking to any or indeed all of them to find the deal which bests suits your needs.
