THINKING OF BUYING?

-

WEARING AJS BADGES might’ve mattered 57 years ago, but these days you’re likely to find little difference between the spec of a Model 20 and a G9. This late example is up for grabs at £4495 at Pembrokeshire Classics: ‘starts easily and drives superbly well’, and has been fitted with indicators to make life easier in traffic THIS 1957 AJAY was offered for private sale recently at £4950, with new tyres, stainless rims and spokes and a refurbished magneto. The paintwork was ‘very good’ and it’s supposed to be an easy starter SIX THOUSAND POUNDS sounds like a lot of cash for this 1951 G9 Clubman, offered by a dealer in Yorkshire recently. It’s a recent restoration: very shiny but there’s no info about how it runs or rides…

THE SAME DEALER also had this rare 550 version of the AMC twine in stock. Enlarged for the American market, this 1954 bike has travelled less than 200 miles since its restoration and has been kept in a heated garage since the rebuild. We wonder if it came from the same household as the Clubman immediately above – they’re visually very similar. Does the extra 50cc make it worth £7000?

PROOF THAT LESS can be more and you don’t have to pay top dollar for a good ’un: this Jampot-equipped 1955 bike is on sale at Rutland Classic Motorcycles for £4600.

It has a reconditioned magneto, stainless spokes and rear rim, no leaks from the primary chaincase, and they reckon it ‘rides beautifully and sounds fantastic with the stubby silencers.’

ANOTHER AJS is up for grabs at Bugad Classic Bikes for £4250. It’s had a recent engine rebuild and is mechanically sound. Pleasingly it’s not been over-restored with some visible patina demonstrating its age

A PRIVATE SELLER offered this 1960 Model 20 which has only done a few hundred miles since an rebuild (reground crank, new bearings, alternator stator, etc). Lots of history and paperwork, some corrosion on the wheels but a good regular runner. Offered for £4850
