Discover the small independent companies we’re loving right now
Support independent businesses and meet the creatives making waves in the interiors world. This month: ceramicists
Fruit motifs have brightened up our interiors for a few years now, but for a sophisticated take on the trend, we adore Yasmin Falahat’s gorgeous fig and pomegranate designs. The London-based ceramicist’s range of serving bowls and plates draw on her memories of sketching the fruits on her parents’ fig tree and serve as a connection to her Iranian and Turkish Cypriot heritage. Grown-up and chic, they’re the perfect way to get your five a day.
Q Hi Yasmin – we’re so pleased to feature your work. Tell us who you are in a sentence… Hi! I’m a multi-disciplinary artist and ceramicist based in east London.
Q What are you passionate about? Creating! I love the process of ceramics – turning a block of clay into something completely new and different. I’m also passionate about food and film.
Q How and when did you start creating your gorgeous designs?
I started selling my ceramics at the end of 2018 after doing a short four-week ceramics course at the start of that year. I’d previously studied textile design at university a few years before, and did lots of different jobs after graduating – both creative and non-creative – while also trying to keep up my own projects. Inspired by drawings I had made of figs and pomegranates, I started to experiment with air-dry clay and gradually got to a point where I wanted to push it further, so I signed up for the ceramics course and loved it. I posted my pieces on Instagram and Etsy, and people really started to respond to them, and the demand kept increasing. It’s just me doing all the making, glazing, replying to emails, social media and packing orders, so it’s a lot to take on and can get overwhelming, but I really enjoy it.
Q What’s your proudest achievement? To be honest, just having my own business and selling things people keep in their homes or give as gifts to loved ones is a really proud achievement. I also recently ordered my own kiln, which is a big step. Watch this space… Follow Yasmin at @yasminfalahat and shop her work at etsy.com/uk/shop/studioyf
