HOLIDAY HAIR, WE NEED TO TALK
We sense the hair panic at this time of year, but take heart: a holiday can be as good for your hair as it is for you. We spoke to John Frieda’s Kerry Warn to find out how
DO WE REALLY NEED A LOT OF HAIR PRODUCTS ON HOLIDAY? THE SHELVES SUGGEST YES. KW:
Not necessarily, though a holiday is a great opportunity to treat your hair to conditioners and masks. Being in and out of the water and very much off-duty, it’s the one time we can afford for our hair to carry a lot of product. (At home, you feel you have to find a special window to do a hair treatment, so we often end up not doing one at all; they do make a difference, though.) One idea is to comb through a leave-in conditioner or hair oil in the morning from mid-lengths to ends, topping up with a protective spray all over. Do this every day and you’ll have much softer hair when you get back!
HOW CAN WE GET OUT OF THAT PULLED-BACK HAIR RUT? KW:
It’s a rut for a reason – in other words, it works! But go for a really low-set bun this summer. It’s on trend, comfortable and works for every hair type. If hair’s fine, spritz with a texturising spray after your first swim to add a bit of bulk. Very thick hair can create a too-bulky bun, so do a plait first and twist that into your low-set style.
SHOULD I COLOUR MY HAIR BEFORE I GO ON HOLIDAY? KW:
It’s best to leave it until you get back, as it’s difficult to predict what your hair will do in the sun, especially if it has just been coloured. And as hair colour does tend to change in the sun, leaving it until afterwards means you’ll get something that works and enhances your new tones in a lasting way. If you’ve got regrowth that’s going to annoy you, go for a root touch-up before your holiday, then a more thorough colour process (ie highlights, full blending of greys, gloss, etc), afterwards.
