French-girl undone hair
Tousled, twisty and casually romantic, ‘French’ hair – made famous by Brigitte Bardot and Jane Birkin – just happens to rule A/W 17. And there’s not a hairdryer in sight
Tousled, teased and twisted rules this season – and all without a hairdryer
ADORNED HAIR
Nothing beats throwing on a gold barrette or bejewelled comb to add an easy-yet-opulent feel to this season’s rumpled charm. Just remember to wear your hair accessories a little lower than usual for a more grown-up look – or try just below the top of the head, like French stylist Teddy Charles did for La Perla.
CAREFREE RIBBON
The message for autumn: put a ribbon on it. Whether that’s wrapping it round a ponytail or tying it around the neck to hold down the hair in a shining sheet at the back, it’s the chicest accessory of the season – and fuss free. “Don’t worry about making it perfect,” says backstage legend Guido Palau. “If it’s a little undone, floppy or asymmetrical, it just adds to the charm.” In other words, keep it DIY.
TEASED PONIES
At Dior, stylists turned the easiest up-do of all – a low-slung ponytail – into a fully-fledged look, by sprinkling texturising powder on the top of the head and gently loosening along the hairline (dry shampoo works well, but might not have as much hold). Add flattering height by gently lifting at the crown (use the long, pointed handle of a tail comb), and as nonchalance is key, coax out a few flyaways around the perimeter.
RUMPLED WAVES
Nothing says ‘French’ as effortlessly as crumpled waves, as seen at Tanya Taylor. At Osman, John Frieda’s UK creative director Luke Hersheson twisted hair into tiny sections with his fingers, then sprayed each with John Frieda’s Sea Waves Sea Salt Spray. “This look requires serious texture, so play around with your fingers, pulling and twisting in different directions while you spray, to create all sorts of bends and kinks throughout the length.” Simple, yet sexily effective.
