HAPPY SKIN IN BELGIUM
A facial refresh that works wonders
Dermatologist Dr Yolanda Bullens pulls no punches. “When you’re young, the surface of the skin is like a handkerchief on a football. But as you age, it’s a towel on a tennis ball.” There’s no denying that gravity has left my skin a lot less perky, so the appeal of La Butte Aux Bois is the dermatology focus of its swish new spa, La Forêt. “No Botox needed on your forehead,” continues Dr Bullens, “but perhaps your crow’s feet, and some fillers here,” indicating the slight downturn of my mouth. We agree on addressing just skin tone for now through facials – I want to see how much can be done without needles. With its quirky touches and modern interior, La Butte Aux Bois blends remarkably well with the country-estate setting. The restaurant is Michelin-starred, and on my first night I devour langoustines and oysters, and a glass of delicious malbec before retiring to my sleek, loft-style room.
My first full day starts with the signature massage, followed by a Jet Peel facial – pressurised air and water that blasts hyaluronic acid and vitamins C and D deep into my skin – which leaves my complexion radiant. The next day I have a La Forêt facial, created to reduce age spots and stimulate collagen production. It includes fruit-acid exfoliation, lymphatic massage and a collagen face mask, and I resolve to treat my skin to more TLC at home.
As I leave, I consider the injectables they suggested. I look and feel fresher, but imagine what the needles could do… KAREN SWAYNE
