PENTIRE PENTHOUSE, NEWQUAY
For uninterrupted views of the beach and ocean beyond, you can’t beat the outrageously cool circular Pentire Penthouse. Our home for the weekend, Pentire is not your usual quaint seaside retreat – for a start, there are bubbles in the fridge, as well as in the hot tub on the roof terrace. In fact, it’s almost like staying at a Soho House – think vintage leather club chairs, ridiculously comfortable beds and cult beauty products in the bathroom (this time, Ren) – but, like the lauded hotel group, it also manages to be laid back, too.
The weekend manages to keep us ‘out of towners’ in our comfort zone: coffee shops with almond milk, cosy pubs, proper fish and chips from Rick Stein’s takeaway, that holiday feeling with the beach on your doorstep, and all without the hassle of getting on a plane.
But back to the house. It has two spacious floors that feel both inviting and cosy but full of panoramic light, which casts a magical glow, particularly at dusk. The four double bedrooms (three en suite) also make Pentire the perfect place to visit with a group of friends – late-night board-game sessions are a given.
The house and its location have everything we could want. There are great restaurants within walking distance, a better equipped kitchen than mine at home, and waking up to this view above the mecca of surfing, where the constant soundtrack you hear is the crashing waves and happy seagulls, really is the perfect escape.
