‘Done well, eyeliner makes your eyes look bigger, so it’s a great tip for everyone. But depending how it’s applied, it can move and smudge and make you look tired, especially if you’re having a dull skin day or, frankly, aren’t 21 anymore. To make the most of its eye-amplifying ability, but still keep it flattering, apply liner to the top lash line only. Work a nice soft pencil/kohl right into your lashes, all the way from the inner to the outer corner. Don’t worry about being neat – roll your colour in and out of the lashes, so you get that lovely dense look – but do keep it as close to the lash line as possible. Then take a small fluffy brush and blend the line, so it evens up and looks soft. The result should stay put, as the product is on the top of your eye and, to some extent, held by your lashes; the placement of the liner in a curve, as opposed to a flick, will make your eyes big and defined without looking heavy or too ‘statement’. If your liner does happen to travel, don’t be afraid of the touch up. Use a pre-soaked cotton bud to remove smudges and blend in some concealer to keep your eye area looking clean and bright.’ TOOLS OF THE TRADE: Laura Mercier Longwear Crème Eye Pencil in Espresso, £19.50, creates a soft, smokey look that really lasts. MAC 219s Pencil, £21, is a short, pencil-shaped brush perfect for blending with. DHC Olive Virgin Oil Cotton Swabs, £6.76, are pre-loaded with olive oil to clean up smudges without irritating the eye area. IT Cosmetics Bye Bye Under Eye Illumination, £23.50, keeps skin looking pristine.
