EDITOR’S LETTER

- Editor SARAH TOMCZAK

I rejoice at that first glimmer of sunshine. In fact, last year’s never-ending summer made me possibly the happiest

I have ever been – gin and tonics in the garden, picnics on the beach, a chance to wear my vast repertoire of sundresses (I have an affliction). Will this year be as good? I’m hopeful

– and we have curated this issue with that same relentlessly positive attitude.

For me, summer started a few weeks ago, when we whisked our cover star, Stacey Dooley, to Portugal for my favourite shoot to date. From our office in Leicester Square, we’d dreamed of white sands, a makeshift raft and Stacey with wild hair and shells around her neck. We could never have imagined it would look as incredible as it does (page 32). Kudos to our brilliant photographer, Chloe Mallett, and the fantastic production team, Shoot Portugal, as well as Stacey for being a dream to work with. I had the privilege of interviewing her myself, and was completely charmed by her intelligence and spirit.

As this is my favourite season, it’s no surprise the fashion in this issue also makes my heart sing. Oonagh Brennan’s polka dot story (page 78) is as chic as it is playful, and Gabriella Minchella has done an amazing job of pulling together the best swimwear from the high street and beyond (page 14). Our beauty pages are beach focused, too. First, Alexandra Friend makes the case for being a sun avoider (page 92), then Alice Manning reveals three different ways to fake a sun-kissed glow instead (page 94).

Of course, there’s tons to read. We have our definitive pick of summer’s best books (page 67), Eat Pray Love author Elizabeth Gilbert talks to Clover Stroud about grief and desire (page 42), one writer explains why she organised a threesome for her husband (page 40) and Penny Wincer reveals the challenges, and joys, that come with going on holiday with her autistic son (page 48).

Finally, if this summer isn’t so balmy, you can still recreate the mood by turning to our Living section (page 107). From delicious Californian recipes to an irresistible Moroccan lodge and clever ideas for your outdoor space, it’s filled with inspiration to squeeze as much joy out of the season as possible. Enjoy!
