TREETOPS TREEHOUSE,
Chulmleigh, Devon
Too old to climb trees but would love to find yourself high up in one? Nothing encapsulates the kidult phenomenon better than a luxury treehouse. Tucked away in rural Devon, Treetops Treehouse, a truly impressive wooden cabin crafted around a 250-year-old oak tree, overlooking Eggesford Forest and a small fishing pond, is glamping at its best.
Inside is a fully fitted kitchen with a dishwasher, a spacious bathroom that has a magnificent copper bath, one king-size bedroom, and a kids’ room with two single beds. There is also a cosy lounge area with a wood burner. However, the best part of the treehouse has to be the sweeping terrace: sitting outside among the tree branches with a large glass of red
wine is about as romantic a retreat as you’re likely to find; and if you get a little chilly (it is England, after all) there is an outdoor heater: how perfect!
On the first night, we dine at the nearby Fox & Hounds Country Hotel (rosemary gnocchi and a duo of Creedy duck).
After a few drinks we head back to our secluded treehouse, and since there is no wi-fi, we immerse ourselves in a classically heated game of Monopoly.
The second evening, we stay in and cook for ourselves. A car is a must in the area, as the closest convenience store is an hour’s walk away (although only a 10-minute drive), and there is just one local taxi company, which you have to book in advance. However, if you are a keen walker, the public path from Eggesford to Chulmleigh is truly a beautiful way to spend the afternoon. MONIKA CHATTERTON
