THE LOOKOUT,

Okehampton, Devon

-

As soon as we arrive in Devon, I know our weekend is set to be special. The winding country roads are filled with eerie, mystical fog, and the hedgerows on either side are full of the sounds of wildlife. It is a far cry from the hustle and bustle of London and, as we pull into the drive of Wolf Wood, I feel my stresses melt away. Co-owner Rachel meets us with a smile in the car park and piles our luggage into the back of a golf buggy. We trundle down a path through the trees in total darkness, to be met with glowing fairy lights illuminating the rope bridge to our home for the weekend: a stunning treehouse. We can smell the wood burner before we even set foot inside and I cannot wait to snuggle up in front of it, book in hand.

The interior is everything we’d hoped for and more. A huge bed is surrounded by drapes, tied back so we can experience the sunrise. There are heaps of cosy blankets atop the squashy sofa, the

well-equipped kitchen is spotless and the bathroom has a gorgeous rainfall shower. There is a bunk room through a concealed doorway, perfect for guests with children, and stacks of games and books.

The pièce de résistance, however, is the balcony’s Jacuzzi bath. We waste no time in opening a bottle of wine and sinking in, feeling the cold night air on our skin as the jets bubble and the water steams. Sitting in a hot tub while listening to the rustling trees around us is truly blissful.

It would have been easy for us to relax in the treehouse for our entire stay, but we decide to explore the area and head to spectacular Lydford Gorge. We embark on a two-hour walk, following thunderous waterfalls and bubbling streams, tiptoeing over moss-covered rocks and ducking under foliage. Then, after working up an appetite, we stop off for a well-deserved Devonshire cream tea at historic Lewtrenchard Manor.

Back in the Lookout, we rest our weary legs in front of the wood burner before enjoying another long dip in the hot tub. I close my eyes, never wanting to leave

– if only I’d booked another few nights… FRANKIE CARY
