You’ll meet Bedouin women and discover rural life in Jordan, learn to cook Jordanian cuisine and spend time having tea and chatting with locals. Relaxing by the Dead Sea, you’ll get a taste of how local people like to spend their free time, while a walking tour of Amman will take you to the heart of the city’s arts and shopping scene.
TOUR HISTORIC AMMAN
Get a sense of what makes Jordan’s capital tick, starting with monuments that remain from Roman times before heading to bohemian Rainbow Street to see its buzzing cafes, elegant 1920s villas and art galleries. On your first night, you’ll take part in a masterclass
at a cooking school. Run by three sisters continuing their grandmother’s legacy, you will learn their stories as you cook maqluba, a casserole served with yogurt or an Arab salad. An excursion to Jerash will be an opportunity to take in some of the greatest Greco-roman ruins in the world, including a collection of archways and amphitheatres.
VISIT THE ROSE CITY OF PETRA
Petra is revered for its incredible ancient buildings carved into the rose-pink rock of the desert. The site has been described by UNESCO as ‘one of the most precious properties of man’s cultural heritage’. On a guided tour, you’ll squeeze through a narrow path between huge towers of rock and get your first glimpse of the iconic Treasury, which has been hand-carved out of rock. You’ll also join a shepherd and gain an insight into a way of life that has remained unchanged for centuries, with the chance to try your hand at milking a goat.
LEARN ABOUT DESERT LIFE
Visit the Wadi Rum and explore its sandstone mountains and vast landscapes alongside the local Bedouin community. Here, Great chunks of rock have been eroded by wind and ancient water, creating breathtaking vistas.
After an afternoon adventuring and getting to know your Bedouin guides, you’ll arrive at their camp. In the evening, you’ll be joined by Bedouin women – an honour, as they are usually reluctant to mix with visitors. They’ll teach you the ancient art of henna and show you how to apply the natural kohl of the region to protect your eyes from the sand. When it’s all over, fall asleep under the stars.
SUNBATHE BY THE DEAD SEA
Your final day will be spent at a luxurious resort on the Dead Sea. The salt density of the water makes it easy to float in, while the mud is believed to have healing properties, so make the most of it with a nutrient-rich mud bath. Later on, you’ll join locals at a Dead Sea beach resort for the afternoon.
