DOUBLE DUTY
One of life’s little inequities is getting breakouts and lines at the same time (just when you thought you were too old for the former and too young for the latter). Step in Dermalogica Retinol Clearing Oil, £69, which combines salicylic acid – the gentle but effective pore-unclogger – with retinyl propionate, a junior member of the retinoid/vitamin A family. The dry oil is not for serious acne or heavyweight stimulation of collagen production, but, as a midway helpmeet, it’s a worthy addition to the skincare shelf.
NEW NUDES
Finding the perfect nude lipstick can be a lifelong quest. Many can look ashy on darker skin tones (and some brands are still only offering a riff on the chalky, pinky-beige theme), while too light a shade acts as a mouth-eraser against white skin. Trial and error is one way to go (that said, you probably won’t go wrong with Tom Ford and MAC), or you could try the match-making tools on the sites of new brands Emolyne and CTZN. Both ask you to choose the model whose skin tone you think most closely matches yours, then up pop suggestions of nudes to flatter. Emolyne lipsticks are highly pigmented, creamy mattes, while CTZN Nudiversal lip colours are cleverly double-ended, with a matte and a gloss. If your lips are unevenly pigmented, pat on a hydrating concealer or fill in with a lip pencil before applying your colour.
THIS MONTH I’VE BEEN
TRANSFORMING my short, straight lashes into longer, more lifted, fanned-out versions with Hourglass Unlocked Mascara, £29; BUFFING my skin smooth with Sand & Sky Enzyme Powder Polish, £44.90. Mix with water or a hyaluronic acid-based serum to amplify the glow; LATHERING up with coconut oil-enriched, aromatic soaps (Orange Blossom & Petitgrain is heavenly) from French brand Horace, £6. Never has a soap left my skin feeling softer.
