DERBYSHIRE
IN A FORD PUMA ST-LINE X
GETTING THERE
Kent to Derbyshire is a long drive, but the Ford Puma St-line X allowed our party of four adults to travel in both comfort and style. The boot was a particular joy – the all-new Megabox extended boot space provides an extra 80 litres of storage and has a waterproof lining and drain plug to let out water: we used it to store and clean muddy boots. The impressive Driver Alert system monitors your driving behaviour and displays a warning icon if it detects signs you’re succumbing to fatigue – ensuring we stopped en route for a much-needed rest and coffee.
WHERE TO STAY
Pulling into the courtyard of Lower Damgate Farm near the tiny village of Ilam, we’re greeted by owner Andrea, two goats, Wilf and Jim, and a purring tabby cat called Thomas. Our accommodation, Winnow Stables, is a luxurious conversion, combining rustic exposed brickwork and wooden beams with a gleaming, modern kitchen, large smart TV, impeccably toasty heating and an even warmer welcome. Sleeps four people, from £83 a night (two-night stay minimum). Visit sawdays.co.uk/ winnow stables
FOOD AND DRINK
Dovedale Brewery is run by our hosts, Andrea and John. We ordered a keg of their Echo Beach IPA and had great fun pouring deliciously smooth pints. Half an hour’s drive away, The Cock Inn at Mugginton serves up a sumptuous Sunday roast – sirloin of Derbyshire beef, creamed leeks and crispy roast potatoes followed by fluffy, sugary churros dipped into the best chocolate sauce I’ve ever tasted.
