HOW TO… WAKE UP A TIRED FACE
If you’re weary of looking, well, weary, make-up artist and Chanel beauty ambassador Kay Montano has solutions
Top tips from the experts
My skin doesn’t bounce back as quickly as it used to after an indulgent evening.
Too much salt, sugar and alcohol causes puffiness and exacerbates my baggy under-eye circles. If I remember,
I’ll take a milk thistle supplement and use Sarah Chapman’s Skinesis skin-brightening Overnight Facial serum, £54, before I go to bed to try to mitigate the damage. When
I wake up, I drink dandelion tea; it’s a diuretic, so gets rid of water retention, but does make you pee a lot!
Tread carefully with bronzer. Most women think it will add warmth to a fatigued complexion; the opposite is true. Matte, muddy colours on cheeks can actually emphasise tiredness-related sallowness. It looks more natural to add luminosity with a dewy highlighter, such as Chanel’s Baume Essentiel Multi-use Glow Stick in Transparent, £33. I rub a little on my fingers, then lightly pat it up and over cheekbones.
A light whisper of blusher is so transformative.
Pink creates the impression of youth and vitality and for an even application, I use a small, round blusher brush to buff a splash of colour on to the apples of the cheeks (try Chanel Joues Contraste Powder Blush in Rose Initial, £35). It’s such a simple step in your make-up routine, but it will add instant freshness to your complexion.
It’s the details that make a difference. Thick, dark eyeliner drawn underneath the eye makes you look more tired, while soft, satin-textured eyeshadow will open up the eye area. Even brushing eyebrow hairs up and using eyelash curlers before you apply mascara will help you to appear more fresh-faced than you may be feeling.
The morning after the night before calls for a tactical approach to skincare. After thoroughly cleansing and exfoliating, I plunge my face into a sink of cold water; it feels amazing and tightens up my skin. Then I’ll apply a hydrating serum, such as Skinceuticals H.A. Intensifier, £90, and use the massage tool Facegym Pro by Xtreem Pulse, £515, which gets the blood flowing and brings colour back into my skin. I’ll also pop on a rich face mask and Shiseido’s Vital Perfection Uplifting and Firming Eye Mask, £67 (for 12), to really amp up depleted moisture levels.
I have a host of supplements that I turn to when my skin (and my mood) need a boost. Both Sambucol Immuno Forte Effervescent Tablets, £8.99 for 15, and Altrient C Liposomal Vitamin C, £39.99 for 30 sachets, are sugar-free but have high levels of antioxidant vitamin C, which supports my immune system and perks up a dull complexion.
Make-up can be a tool to spread joy. Who knows if we’ll be able to go to parties? But if I do go to any, I want to make people happy with my playful and irreverent make-up. I like the idea of applying tiny silver stars or drawing abstract lines around my eyes with a metallic pencil.
