WASHINGTON DC, USA

- FIONA ANDREWS

Just a seven-hour flight from London, America’s capital city is my destination for a whirlwind 48 hours, and while a selfie outside The White House is a must, I’m keen to get to know the city beyond its iconic landmarks. I’m staying at The Morrow Hotel in the hip Union Market area. The huge, light lobby provides a calm oasis, while my oat pillow (selected from the menu earlier) awaits, as do Le Labo toiletries. I opt for dinner at Le Clou, The Morrow’s French restaurant, and order poached seabass with fennel, orange and dill, rounded off with a sublime pot de crème au chocolat.

The next morning, I forgo the hotel breakfast in favour of an early start and a coffee at small Ethiopian cafe, Sidamo, where it comes in a traditional long-stemmed pot. It’s relaxed and far removed from my usual morning Pret.

Taking in a museum feels compulsory, as there are more than 70 and most are free. I pick the National Museum of African American History & Culture and the ‘Taking the Stage’ exhibition, which includes Whitney Houston’s music awards and Diana Ross’s tiny dresses. I break for food at the Waldorf Astoria’s grand Peacock Alley, where a lofty atrium is the perfect spot for mini lobster rolls and cherry orange scones, before heading to the in-house spa for a Himalayan Salt Therapy experience – 30 minutes inhaling the fine salt particles is said to aid respiratory function, eliminate bacteria and soothe the lungs.

As the sun sets, The Wharf, DC’S waterfront area, is the place to be. Sushi fans will love the rooftop restaurant Moonraker for its sashimi and cocktails.

On Sunday, with just a few hours left, I take a 20-minute cab ride to Georgetown, the oldest part of the city, dating back to 1751. I wander around a flea market before realising it’s time to head home. A 48-hour trip will give you a great sense of the city, but it will leave you hankering for more…
