Service schedule

The 6000-mile interim and 12,000-mile main services are standard Triumph fare. The interim service is mainly oil and filters, but there’s also a plug check (many owners ignore this, with no ill effects - the plugs are changed at the 12k service anyway) and throttle body balance (definitely do NOT ignore this, as it makes a big difference to vibration and throttle response).

Valve clearances are every 12,000 miles, which bumps service costs up, and there’s also a requirement to check and reset the cam timing at the first 12k service. This requires a special tool. You’ll also need access to a diagnostic system for some settings and fault code re-sets.

The book also specifies a thorough check and re-grease of suspension pivots and steering bearings at 12k, but it’s often ignored. Bad move, since they aren’t always properly greased at the factory; neglecting them can cause early failure.

New and used parts prices

New service parts aren’t too bad, with an oil filter at £9.36 and an air filter around £25. Or for a full service there’s a kit with filters and all gaskets and seals for around £90.

Lots of owners recommended squaredeals-ltd.co.uk for discount parts. As well as basic service parts and other goodies, they can supply progressive fork springs for £99.99 a set, ‘unbreakable’ shorty CNC clutch and brake levers for £69.99 a pair, an EBC clutch kit for £59.99 and bar risers for £44.99 a pair.

A few Tigers are finding their way into breakers. Midlands-based triumph hinckley parts are listing forks, hand guards (£60), ECU and ignition/locks and fuel tanks in white or black. There are also plenty of Tiger bits on ebay, with fuel tanks starting around £100, fuel pumps around £65 and engine side covers (sought after in good condition) from around £50.
