PROTECTION

A helmet is the only bit of riding gear that’s actually required by law, and that’s for a very good reason – it could save your life. Never buy a second-hand helmet. Even if it looks perfect on the outside, you don’t know if it has been damaged inside by being dropped.

COMFORT

If you’re going to be doing long-distance touring then comfort becomes far more of an issue than on a short Sunday blast. Always try a helmet before you buy it, but in an ideal world, ride in it. This may not be possible in shops but if a friend has a helmet that fits, ask if you can try it out.
