Five seaside destinations

Our first resorts…

-

Largs, Ayrshire

Go for: Ice cream • Views• Nostalgia The nicest seaside break within easy reach of Glasgow, the quiet town of Largs has great views across the Firth of Clyde and the brilliant Nardini’s ice-cream parlour. Must-ride road: A78 Greenock to Largs (though the narrow and twisty Old Largs Road from Greenock is fun for trail bikes).

Scarborough, 2

North Yorks

Go for: Racing • Moors • Bike meets Trundle round the Oliver’s Mount race track in the park above the town and wonder how people race superbikes here. Great roads on the surrounding moors and plenty of bike meets in quaint towns and villages. Must-ride road: A171 Scarborough to Whitby (or B1257 Helmsley to Stokesley).

Poole Quay, Dorset 3

Go for: Bike night • Beer • Ferries Every Tuesday evening in the summer, the whole Quay is closed to traffic except bikes, marshalled and friendly. We’d park up, walk down and have a beer. And if you don’t want ride locally, get a ferry to France. Must-ride road: A350 Poole to Warminster.

4 Douglas, Isle of Man

Go for: History • Scenery • Raing It’s not just the TT (or the Classic TT, or the Southern 100). Packed with biking culture, the island is a lovely place any time of year. Must-ride road: The TT route, of course, but don’t ignore the A36 in the south.

5 Aberystwyth, Wales

Go for: Promenade • A44 • The Devil Regular bike meets on the prom are good, but the roads nearby are better. Worth a trip to Devil’s Bridge when you’re there. Must-ride road: A44 Leominster to Aber.
