WE WERE SADDENED

to hear of the passing of John Surtees CBE, who died on March 10 at the age of 83. He took the 500cc World Championship four times between 1956 and 1960 for MV Agusta and won the Senior race at the Isle of Man TT three years in a row.

Surtees moved to car racing in 1960 and won the Formula 1 world championship in 1964 for Ferrari – the only person in history to win world titles on two and four wheels.

Despite his success in blueriband car racing, Surtees always loved motorcycles and even in his later years would regularly be seen at Goodwood and other historic festivals, riding bikes from his past to thrill onlookers. He was a true gentleman and will be sadly missed.
