If you’re considering the new Yamaha R6 because you’re tempted by the idea of a focused supersport bike that boasts cutting-edge technology, don’t overlook the last Ninja. Since 2013 it’s had adjustable traction control, Showa Big Piston Forks and optional sports ABS, yet for some reason all this seemed to have been somewhat forgotten about. It’s a shame really, because the ZX-6R is also 12bhp more powerful than the new R6 at the top end and much more grunty through the midrange – in part because the Kawasaki’s engine is a smidge bigger, at 636cc. You don’t have to look too hard to find nearly-new bikes, with less than 1000 miles on the clock, being offered for less than £7000 – saving a very useful four grand compared with a brand-spanking R6.
