THE RIDE VERDICT

-

IN A CLASS where a two-year model update cycle was the norm, the fact the CBR600RR survived a decade with mostly only detail changes speaks volumes for the rightness of the original design. That longevity also has the knock-on effect of good parts availability from both aftermarket and used sources, which in turn has a direct influence on long-term running costs. It’s supremely reliable, extremely well-built, and surprisingly versatile for a bike that can set some pretty decent laptimes, even in standard form. The only real problem from the point of view of buying one used is that good RRS hold their value pretty well. A Kawasaki ZX-6R of similar age and mileage will often be a full grand cheaper than a 600RR in a showroom over the road. But it’s fair to say the CBR is probably a better all-round, day-to-day bike.

You also need to check that you’re getting what you think you’re getting - we’ve seen plenty of 2011/12 models registered in 2013 or even 2014, for example, so don’t take the registration as any proof of actual age. Come to think of it, Padgetts are selling a new old stock 2003 version only registered earlier this year. You definitely wouldn’t want to buy that one by mistake...
