2005-2006 GSX-R1000 K5/K6

Com­plete up­date of ear­lier model. More power and torque from larger ca­pac­ity, lighter pis­tons, ti­ta­nium valves, twin in­jec­tors. Re­vised sus­pen­sion, ra­dial caliper brakes. £4000-£6000

2007-2008 GSX-R1000 K7/K8

Slightly more power and three-way map­ping but now with twin ex­hausts and ex­tra cat­alytic con­vert­ers. 10mm longer wheel­base, very slight ge­om­e­try change, thicker brake discs and ad­justable rearsets. Elec­tronic steer­ing damper, high and low speed com­pres­sion damp­ing ad­just­ment for forks and shock. £4500-£6500

2009-2011 GSX-R1000 K9/L0/L1

Vis­ually very sim­i­lar, ex­cept for re­design of twin pipes. Lots of changes un­der the skin, with shorter stroke and big­ger bore, vari­able in­let tracts, big valves and higher com­pres­sion. A new chas­sis too, with shorter wheel­base but longer swing arm, and Showa Big Pis­ton Forks. £5500-£6800

2012-2016 GSX-R1000 L2/L3/ L4/L5/L6

Re­vised styling and lots of tweaks — lighter pis­tons, dif­fer­ent cams and some head work for the engine and new forks and monoblock brakes for the chas­sis. Re­turn to a sin­gle ex­haust. ABS ar­rives as an op­tion for 2014. No more changes un­til the all-new 2017 model. £6000-£10,000
