Parts and servicing

Service schedule

A simple schedule, based on 6000-mile intervals. It’s labour-intensive because valve clearances are checked at every 6k interval. Fortunately they’re easy to access and not too hard to set. Oil and filter are also changed at 6k, along with throttle body balancing. Spark plugs, air filter and final drive oil are every other service. Fork oil is at 18,000 miles — we’d change it sooner. Gearbox oil and alternator belt are due every 24,000 miles. Brake fluid’s every two years but again, we wouldn’t leave it that long. Apart from that, just the usual checks, including spoke tension and run-out.

New and used parts prices

New service parts aren’t bad — £12 for an oil filter and £17 for an air filter, and brake pads at £68.50 a pair. A clutch lever is about £60 while an ignition coil (integral to the plug caps) is about £100. The popular Bmw-approved Akrapovic silencer is about £640, but add £900 to that if you want the headers and link pipe too.

Genuine and pattern parts are available from marque specialists. For example Motorworks can supply Ferodo brake pads for £26.40 a pair, air filter for £19.20, oil filter for £9, and alternator drive belt for £18.

There aren’t many R ninets in breakers yet, but mechanical parts are shared with other models so it’s model-specific cosmetics and forks etc which are in short supply. We’ve seen mirrors from £38, ABS sensors £40 and rear discs from £45. Wheels and fuel tanks go for up to £500 and good forks up to a grand a pair.
