GEAR Q & A

-

QI currently have a Sena SMH3 but, because of increasing deafness, I am struggling to hear it well. Can you recommend the intercom with best clarity and highest volume? I want a device that will connect to a GPS, an iphone (for music) and, ideally, to another rider. The most important criteria is clarity/volume. I use a Shoei J open face helmet. I am happy with wired or Bluetooth units.

ASena tend to do the best volume and clarity so if you’re struggling with that, another brand won’t improve matters (though you might want to consider upgrading to a more-modern Sena unit). Using a full-face helmet instead of an open-face one will, of course, cut wind noise but a new Shoei is likely to be more than a new intercom.

Your best bet may be a set of custom earplugs with built-in monitors, which you can plug directly into the existing Sena. As well as blocking out other noise, the music and directions will be beamed directly into your ears for the best possible clarity. We’d suggest www.ultimateear.com but be warned; they’re an expensive option.

QCan I use soft panniers on my Triumph Tiger 1050? I’m worried about burning on the high exhaust.

AIt should be possible but you might be better off using a tailpack or rollbag across the pillion seat. A tall tailpack will stay clear of the can, while you can make sure a rollbag doesn’t sag downwards by packing it out so the material is taut (or a bit of board can add rigidity).

If you need to take a pillion though, consider fitting a luggage rack. Prices range from £100-150 but they’ll keep a rollbag clear of the exhaust and the passenger can use it as a back rest.
