YOUR NEXT GREAT RIDE

THE PEAK DISTRICT

-

THERE’S STILL TIME to get out there and enjoy some of England’s green and pleasant landscapes. Alright, it’s October, which means we might be closer to the Winter Solstice than the Summer Solstice but it’s not that cold yet. Put on a thick pair of socks, grab your neck tube and get riding.

Admittedly, chances are you’re probably not planning a fortnight-long escapade to the Outer Hebrides, but instead looking for somewhere with head-spinning scenery that’s a little closer to home. Our choice would be the gorgeous Peak District — fairly close to the centre of Britain and only a morning’s ride from deepest, darkest London.

Once there, the UK’S original National Park offers a plethora of panoramas, with a feast of farmland, moorland, hills and valleys to discover. Steer clear of main roads — especially between tourist hotspots — and get lost on its beautiful backroads, like this one: the B5053 near Earl Sterndale. Nearby is a pair of cascading hairpins at Crowdecote, on the way to discovering the sweet treat of an original Bakewell Pudding. To the south is Matlock Bath’s famous biker meeting spot. To the north is the majestic Mam Tor and Winnats Pass, and further still the Derwent Reservoir is a can’t-miss for Dambusters fans.

Sounds a lot? There’s still time… WHEN TO GO Sooner rather than later — it’s Derbyshire (mostly), so cross your fingers for a burst of very late summer… HOW TO GET THERE From the south, head for Birmingham or Derby and pick up the A515 through Ashbourne and into the Peaks. From the north, follow Holme–glossop–buxton. WHERE TO STAY Buxton is central, charming and characterful. It’s also home to the nation’s oldest hotel, the Old Hall Hotel (www. oldhallhotelbuxton.co.uk). WHERE TO RIDE Almost anywhere, though some of the more (in)famous roads (Cat and Fiddle, Snake Pass) are less fun now they’re subject to 50mph limits. For RIDE reader Andy Tune’s epic 160-mile daytrip, head to www.ride.co.uk/routes and search for “GBRO Peak Practice”.
