What we learned

“Photography is something I’ve been into for four or five years at a hobby level. I hoped today I’d pick up techniques that I just wouldn’t think about previously. I’m into photography in general, but I’m personally into bikes so this is more the kind of motorsport I’m interested in. I used to go to British Superbikes, but I’m not so fond of sitting in traffic any more! I tend to go to local club racing these days — you can just go in and stay as long as you like. My wife found this course and told me about it; no idea where she found it and I’d never heard of it. I’d never heard of Double Red before either!”

Shaun Smith

“I’m actually a professional photographer but I do more studio stuff — portraits and commercial work — and I’ve never done much like this; I’ve dabbled a few times in the past... but it’s just about having that knowledge and experience. The stuff I shoot tends to be still or not moving very fast, so it’s a new challenge. I’ve heard of Double Red and they said I should come along to improve my skills — it’s about expanding your knowledge, trying something new. It’s a different skill set and a lot harder than you think. I don’t ride a bike but I can’t get my head round how quick they are.”

Peter Sollis

“I’ve always been passionate about watching bike racing and I ride myself, so I tried it out on a small camera doing a little bit at Cadwell, and decided to expand it and buy a DSLR to get better shots. Then I saw on Twitter James was going to be doing these training days and thought that’s something I’d really like to do. Motorbikes are what I’ve mostly been taking photos of since I started, so I just want to improve on it. This is my first time at Mallory; normally I go to Cadwell every year for BSB. James has already told me I’m better than my kit, so that’s made me feel good!”
