How we tested them

- COMFORT CONFIDENCE

FIT To assess the fit, we rode in our usual-sized boots — Euro 44. We looked at whether they felt tight or loose; how they accommodated our calves and how well they retained the heel.

How the boots felt when they were on, riding both on the balls of the feet and on the arch. We considered how well the boots articulated using the gear lever or brake; whether anything dug in to our feet and whether they felt clammy or cold. We also took a moisture reading at the heel of the boot after each ride with a damp meter to see how well they dispersed moisture.

EASE OF USE How well each boot performed on a road ride. If they were easy to change gear with; how they felt on the levers and pedals and how easy they were to get on and off.

Combined with each boot’s CE rating, we looked at how well-made they seemed to be and what form of protection they appeared to offer, resulting in a confident ride.

WATERPROOFING We conducted two tests; a spray test where a pressure washer was directed at one boot for a set period of time while sat on the bike flexing and a soak test, where both boots were submerged in 150mm of water for a set period. An extreme and non-typical test but it would highlight any weakness.
