Does leaving mean we can bin our cats?

EU type-approvals will need to be replaced with new ‘GB’ ones on vehicles sold in this country but GB type-approval will still be based on EU standards, at least initially, so there won’t be any change to emissions rules.

When it comes to Euro5 emissions rules, which also come into force on January 1, 2021, there’s no dodging them, and as and when Euro6 rules are introduced, it’s likely we’ll remain aligned, as the standards are the basis of rules all over the world.

Campbell explains: “Manufacturers want things to be consistent and more parts of the world are adopting Euro standards. Established OEMS wouldn’t want to see standards lowered and government would never support it due to pressure on climate-change. They want to be seen to be leading on it, so our biggest fear is that the UK government makes emissions standards even tougher. Our preference is that the UK remains aligned with the EU.”
