Three great places to visit
BEST FOR VIEWS HARTSIDE PASS, ALSTON
The Hartside Café might be no more (and the new one isn’t built yet) but it’s still worth a stop at the top in the old car park, and taking some time to drink in the stunning views instead, looking out across Penrith and the M6 to the Lake District beyond.

BEST FOR WATER DERWENT RESERVOIR
You don’t have to be a fan of watersports to get a kick out of big bodies of dammed water — they’re good for just chilling out and being impressed by the sheer engineering of it all. The reservoir took seven years to dig out and fill (most of the 1960s), is 3.5 miles long, 100ft deep and holds 11,000 million gallons. Price of entry Free
BEST FOR BESPOKE LEATHERS SCOTT LEATHERS
Jimmy Aird has been making made-tomeasure leathers since before any of us were born (ish). The ex-motocross maestro is still at it, producing a range of textiles, leather jackets and jeans, and of course his one-piece suits made to order in the UK.
