What to look for on the test ride
The Aprilia Caponord 1200 is an underrated blend of decent V-twin performance, quality Italian handling and style and impressive electronics and components — and all at a great used price. But, though generally reliable, it’s only a bargain if it all works. Check that any possible warranty work (fuel gauge, exhaust valve) has been done and that they now work correctly.
Look for any corrosion, particularly around its fasteners and exhaust, and also check that, on any test ride, the clever semi-active suspension works correctly, particularly over bumps — it’s not unheard of for the adjuster motors to fail.
If there’s any evidence of being ridden off-road, check that nothing is damaged or has worked loose. The V-twin motor, though clattery low down, particularly in Sport mode, is more refined than most and should be relatively smooth and free-revving. The OE chain has been criticised for excessive wear so look for play and if it needs replacing, haggle on the price.
The big Brembo brakes, meanwhile, are fairly standard for this type of bike; powerful and should be beyond criticism.
