BMW models hold their value and the R ninet is one of the best examples. New in 2014 it cost £11,600; nowadays the same bike is worth £7500, which is just £700 a year depreciati­on. Why? Initially BMW’S retro was in short supply, inflating its value but as the firm has never updated the R ninet, it has never seen a drop in value due to being outdated. Why not? BMW basically nailed it right from the off with the R ninet. A great blend of new and old, the R ninet’s chassis is remarkably adept but it is the sound and spirit from the air-cooled boxer that sets it aside.

1 Performanc­e mods; some owners go too far and alter the airbox etc.

2 The SP model adds Öhlins semiactive suspension. Prices start at around £9000.

The annoying fuelling snatch can be cured through an ECU remap, which completely transforms the bike’s lowspeed manners.

A flyscreen takes a bit of the effort out of riding but really improving the ninet is down to personal taste and style through customisat­ion.
