What are they like to use?

As usual, our testing procedure was two-fold; in the workshop, we applied steam into the neck aperture of the HJC CS-15 helmet for a set period of time onto the bare visor, the visor treated with the Muc-off spray and the visor with the Pinlock insert fitted. We then rode in the helmet under the same conditions.

In the workshop

The steam formed a layer of mist across the entirety of the bare visor which made vision impossible. Once de-misted and dried, we applied the Muc-off spray to half of the visor and again, the untreated half instantly misted up. The treated half didn’t, which was what we wanted but a closer look revealed a slightly blurry finish, which appeared to have ‘spread’ the moisture across the inside of the visor. It made vision slightly tricky though much better than no treatment. Finally, we fitted the Pinlock and the result was a complete lack of

misting on the inside of the insert while the area of the visor outside the lens misted as it did with no treatment.

On the road

Riding was a nightmare with the untreated visor. At urban speeds, I couldn’t close the visor fully at all and even up to speed and with the chin vent open, there was still too much misting to be able to safely see on the 6°C ride.

With the Muc-off spray applied, vision was better though the visor began to blur. The spray did the same thing as in the workshop; it seemed to spread the moisture across the surface rather than letting it settle as tiny droplets. Blurry areas could be cleared with air flow and vision was better but still not perfect — the trick is to look 'past' the moisture layer.

Finally, I fitted the Pinlock insert and this worked as a well-fitting Pinlock always does — it prevented any fogging of the area that the insert covered. We found the familiar situation of misting around the outside of the insert on the single layer of visor. Eventually, it did begin to develop a spot of moisture directly in front of my mouth about the size of a £2 coin but this eventually stabilised.

Extras

We found the same results on a drop-down visor and glasses; the Muc-off spray prevented them misting but there was a slight blurring.
