Q Are you better off getting the GT?

Is saving £1525 for the sportier version the smart choice?

What’s different?

On the face of it, the GT is simply a GTL minus its topbox. However, when you delve a little deeper, you discover the differences are far greater. As well as coming in a more outgoing selection of paint schemes (as well as black...), the GT’S footpegs are set further back and higher and are rubber-topped pegs rather than the GTL’S wider foot boards.

The GT’S bars are narrower and set slightly further forward while its fairing lacks some of the GTL’S external wind deflectors. Also, as the GT has a split rider/pillion seat, its seat height is adjustable between 810 and 830mm; the single seat unit on the GTL is fixed at 750mm unless you get a whole new accessory seat unit. The GT’S screen is also indented on its upper lip where the GTL’S is both wider and taller and the GT’S mirror stems have aero cut outs.

Do they ride differently?

Yes, very much so. As you are sat further forward and higher on the GT, you aren’t in such a slouch, which makes it slightly less comfortable. However some riders prefer a more ‘straightback’ riding position. On the go, the GT’S screen isn’t as good at deflecting wind as the GTL’S, resulting in noticeably more turbulence and noise, and the fairing also leaves you slightly more exposed. That said, the indent makes it easier to look over the screen.

In bends, the GT feels the more agile due to its riding position, which sets your arms closer together and gives the impression of being sportier and a touch more focused. The seat is also firmer than the GTL’S and as its height is greater, you don’t feel like you are sitting ‘in’ the bike as on the GTL. It is all subtle alterations that give it a more sporty attitude while not compromising too much on comfort or weather protection.

Which should I go for?

The base GT is £20,395 while the GTL starts at £21,920, so the GT is cheaper and has more of an element of fun about it. The GTL is a mile-muncher that envelopes you as you churn through the miles while the GT leaves you a bit more exposed to enjoy the riding experience.

If you are looking at going to the Alps on holiday, the GT will get you there and you can enjoy the bends on your holiday where with the GTL, you are more likely to be enjoying the view instead. And you can always add a topbox to the GT as it has a luggage rack as standard.
